Tuesday November 2nd - Election Day!

Wednesday November 10th - Tax Assessment Workshop Part I
Broadcast on C17 during November and January

Another Property Assessment is coming to Derry ... and soon.
How will it affect your wallet?

In June 2004, Derry property owners received a letter from David Gomez (Town Assessor), suggesting that the IMPENDING ASSESSMENT CHANGE, will not likely result in any change in the tax revenue, but will update values for certain parcels in town in an effort to achieve the state-mandated "100% of market value" criterion.

Will this Assessment Change affect your Tax Bill and your wallet? Most Likely.

There are a number of classifications of property, one of which is land. It was stated in the letter "that most properties will see an increase in their assessed value"

With the current local interest in assessments, The Alliance of Derry Taxpayers will be holding a Public Workshop on Property Tax Assessments, on Wednesday, November 10th, 2004 at 7PM, at Marion Gerrish Center (room 2) located at 39 West Broadway (Rt 102) in Derry.

Our Featured Guest Speakers for this Public Workshop (thanks to the efforts of Senator Frank Sapareto) will be:
  • Robert M. Boley, AAS. Director of Communications for the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration (DRA).
  • Linda Kennedy, Head of the Equalization Bureau for the NH DRA.
Based on both their positions, and experience, they will bring a wealth of Property Tax Assessment knowledge to Derry during this workshop.

This workshop provides a great opportunity to find out:
  • How is your property is assessed?
  • How does your assessment compare with that of your neighbors?
  • How is your property assessed by comparison to similar properties elsewhere in the State?

As part of the workshop, a General Property Tax Assessment Q&A Session will be provided, as time allows.

Saturday November 27th - Derry Holiday Parade

Did you see the Alliance of Derry Taxpayers' float in the Derry Holiday Parade? ADT Stickers & Brochures were available/provided to those at the parade.

    Wednesday, December 1, 2004
    Tax Assessment Workshop Part II
    Reassessment Behind the Scenes.
Broadcast on C17 during December and January

Another Property Assessment has come to Derry, and there is more to come ...
How is it affecting your wallet now, and how about next year?

With the current local interest in assessments, the Alliance of Derry Taxpayers will be holding their 2nd Public Workshop in a series, on Property Tax Assessments at 7PM, at Marion Gerrish Center located at 39 West Broadway (Rt 102) in Derry.

Our Featured Guest Speaker for this Public Workshop will be:

    Ed Naile:
  • Chair of Coalition of New Hampshire Taxpayers: www.cnht.org.
  • Host of the Live Radio Program "Taxpayer Radio" on 90.7 FM, Thursdays from 6-8pm.
  • Has aquired a vast amount of Property Tax Assessment knowledge and experience.
  • Been on the front lines of appeals for several towns throughout NH, and has an excellent understanding, of the rules that apply to the assessment process.
  • Been involved in several cases in which the assessment firms, hired by a New Hampshire town, did not follow the rules.

During this exciting workshop, Ed's insight into assessments and the related processes, will provide key information that each property owner/taxpayer should be aware of.

We are honored to have Ed join us in Derry, for this workshop.

This workshop provides a great opportunity to find out:

  • Did you know there is more to your assessment than what appears on your individual card?
  • How is the municipality assessed as a whole?
  • What rules must the assessing firm follow?
  • Have these rules been followed?
  • What is happening in other towns?

As part of the workshop, a General Property Tax Assessment Q&A Session will be provided, as time allows.

    Friday, December 17, 2004
Signed Petitions will be delivered to the Town Clerk
    Come and Join Us!

On Friday December 17th at 10:15AM representatives of the ALLIANCE OF DERRY TAXPAYERS (ADT) (derrytax.org) will deliver to the Derry Town Clerk a petition containing 665 names and signatures which will place the following question on the March 14th, 2005 Ballot in Derry:

"Shall a charter commission be established for the sole purpose of establishing official ballot voting under the current form of government (RSA 49-B:3 VI)".

    Executive Summary:
The ADT is asking the Voters of Derry, if they would like to have more say in how their Tax Dollars are spent. If so, then as a first step, each Voter should vote in favor of this Ballot Question.

    Detailed Explanation:
The ADT is asking the Derry Voters to support electing a Charter Commission which would have one purpose only: to see what items or duties currently voted on solely by the Town Council (7 people), should be changed to become subject to the Voters' opinion at future March elections.

If this measure passes in March (only a simple majority is needed), then a nine-member Charter Commission would be elected, via a special election in May. The elected Charter Commission would work on the Charter, making changes ONLY related to official ballot voting. (They will not be able to make wholesale charter changes that could hurt the voter/taxpayer). Changes such as Budget, Bonds, Union Contacts, Land Use Regulations and any other Legislative Functions could be made subject to the Derry Voters, instead of the 7 Councilors.

Recommendations developed by the Charter Commission would go through a series of public hearings. Then the Amended Charter with Official Ballot voting, would appear on the March 2006 ballot. If the Amended Charter is approved by the Voters, then the Voter, not the Council, will have a say on issues as outlined in the Amended Charter.

The ADT would at least like to see a Charter Commission establish a certain monetary threshold for items, over which spending should be subject to the Voters' approval, thus removing the sole decision making from the Town Council. The ADT wants You the Voters of Derry to have control over how Tax Dollars affect Your pocketbook.

More details on the Petition Process, are available here: Explaining the Petition.
